Hiring Moving Companies: What You Need to Know

TwoVeteranMovers is your local moving company!

Do you have a move coming up and looking at moving companies? You’re not alone. Every year, families move. Moving is stressful. Whether you’re moving for a job or need a bigger space, moving is hard. One of the most stressful decisions to make is choosing the right moving company.

Because of this, many families choose to move on their own. Unfortunately, this usually causes problems, takes longer than anticipated and presents technical issues. For example, how to get the heavy washing machine down a flight of stairs. What if the vehicle isn’t large enough? How many trips will it take to complete the move? How much gas will that use? How much time will it take in general?

It is not uncommon for a family to begin the process, only to end it by calling and pricing moving companies! And that’s ok. There are many good ones out there. And, with a little knowledge, you can find the right fit for you. If you’ve decided to start calling moving companies, here are a few things you should consider:

How much can you afford?

First, consider your budget. A moving company is not going to be free. Have a cost in mind and begin calling your local moving companies. Many will be able to give you a quote over the phone. Keep in mind that a quote is generally an estimate and it will rarely cost less than the price given over the phone. In most instances, it’s going to be a little more. There are advantages to flat-rate moving companies and those that charge by the hour. You can read more about those here.

What do you need?

Next, consider the services you need. Before calling moving companies, determine with what part of the move you need help. Do you need packing services or loading and unloading? Do you have speciality items such as a safe or piano? Be sure to ask for a list of speciality items. It is not uncommon for a customer to find an extra charge for simple items such as a baby stroller or faux plant.

When do you need help?

Also, have a moving date in mind but be willing to be flexible, if possible. Some moving companies charge a higher rate for weekend or evening moves. Some moving companies have days without any moves and may offer a discount to fill that slot.

Do your research!

Finally, research the moving companies online. Look for reviews, both positive and negative. While there are many reputable moving companies out there, there are a few bad ones. A little research can help ensure you’ve made the right choice.
