3 Things You Should Know About Self-Moving

3 things you should know about self-moving

If you have a move coming up, it’s never too soon to start planning. Often, unexpected surprises arise which can cause delays and stress during a self-move. Proper planning and knowledge can help prevent these issues.

1. You will need a bigger truck than you may realize

Self-moving sounds like the best way to handle an upcoming move. You can save the money and the time if you do it yourself. Moving, after-all is not complicated. But that does not mean it will be easy. For starters, loading a truck can be a complicated task. And many self-movers underestimate the actual size needed. A one or two bedroom apartment will not fit into the back of a pickup truck for s single trip. Renting a truck is an extra cost but it will likely save you time and money in the end. The best rule of thumb is to rent a truck larger than what you think you will need.

2. You will need a few supplies

If you’re not using professional movers, you will still need some of their tools. For example, a good dolly will allow you to move more boxes at once. You will also be able to move heavier items without much help. Dollys and hand trucks are rentable from the same companies that rent moving trucks.

Moving blankets are another tool to have on hand. Stacking boxes and miscellaneous items on top of your furniture will cause damage. This is preventable by using moving blankets to protect your items.

A few other items to consider having to include moving straps, rope, and tape.

3. You’re going to need help with appliances

Deciding to self-move means you won’t be paying movers. But this does not mean you won’t need help. Many movers underestimate the weight of heavy appliances such as washers and dryers. It is likely you will still need help with these heavier items. Consider asking a trusted friend or family member for these items for your self-move.

Moving is a big job, especially when you’re planning a self-move. That does not mean a self-move is not possible. With proper planning and consideration of the above, your self-move should be easier. Consider these elements of self-moving and decide whether it’s a good option for you. You might find you will be better served by hiring a moving company.
